1. Grandview Drive
Located in Peoria Heights, Grandview Drive is probably the most well-known drive in the Peoria area. In fact, Theodore Roosevelt dubbed it the “World’s Most Beautiful Drive” when he visited it in 1910. It’s also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it’s a historic property considered worthy of preservation. That being said, Grandview Drive is one of the best places to experience the fall scenery. It features panoramic views of the Illinois River as well as a variety of historic houses, including a castle known for its Halloween festivities. 2. Fon du Lac Drive Lookout Points
Fon du Lac Drive, situated in East Peoria, provides an assortment of lookout points where visitors can take in the beauty of the Illinois River and the Peoria Skyline. Additionally, there is a park nearby which features a quaint little farm. 3. Rocky Glen Park
Rocky Glen Park, located off of Kickapoo Creek Rd., is an expansive trail that features 126-acres of forest, hills, and streams. It’s an ideal place for hiking, and even more so during the fall season. Although the trail is a little more rugged than others in the area, there are frequent benches where hikers can rest and admire the wildlife and autumn landscape. The hills in the park are rather steep, and the box canyon requires visitors to cross a creek, but the scenery is worth the extra effort. The park’s rock formations are similar to those in Starved Rock State Park, and it boasts a waterfall that freezes once the cold weather rolls around. Autumn is the perfect time to tackle this trail, with the leaves in full splendor and a refreshing chill in the air.
4. Tower Park
Tower Park is located next to Grandview Drive and has one main feature that attracts visitors: a 200-foot-tall Observation Tower. Complete with a glass elevator, the tower offers a 360-degree view of the Heights and the Illinois River Valley, which is especially beautiful during the fall. The park also features a lovely water fountain, numerous picnic tables, and an assortment of quaint little shops nearby, making it the perfect place to spend a relaxing fall afternoon with friends or family.
5. Wildlife Prairie Park
Wildlife Prairie Park is situated right outside of Peoria, and it’s another unique place to experience the beauty of fall. What makes it even more appealing is the 60 different animal species that it is home to, including bison, cougars, and black bears. Visitors can venture through a variety of trails, encountering a diverse array of creatures along the way. The wooded areas become a beautiful autumn terrain that visitors will stop and admire as they appreciate the wonders of Midwestern landscape.
The prospect of leaf-peeping in Peoria may seem unexciting, but there are plenty of places where you can appreciate fall in all its glory.
