After a one-year hiatus, the homecoming Powderpuff game was officially back in full swing for the 2025-2026 school year. The Powderpuff game is an activity during homecoming week where the seniors and juniors play against each other in a flag football game, but with a twist: in this game the girls are the players, and the boys are the cheerleaders. Senior coach and orchestrator of the game, Darrell Taylor, explained that his attempt to bring back a different Richwoods tradition is what sparked this year’s game back into life. Darrell had originally gone to principal Billy Robison, asking to bring back the senior lock in but was countered with his allowance to bring back the previously suspended homecoming Powderpuff game. When asked about the difficulties of organizing this game, Darrell explained that with such short notice, finding players and times to practice was a tedious and stressful task. At first, he was unsure if the Juniors would even have enough people on their team to play. Additionally, there were the cheerleading teams that needed to be assembled to cheer and support the players. Senior coach Christian Johnson explained that difficulties in consistently coming to practice arose within her team, which slowed their progress in effectively learning the cheers. While these issues seemed daunting, the coaches and players of the Powderpuff game overcame them to deliver an amazing experience for players and spectators alike.
With the issues ironed out, the day of the game came and went without a hitch. The game took place on Wednesday, September 10th at 5:30 PM on the Richwoods football field. Both teams relentlessly battled for the crown, and impressive plays were made including full field touchdowns, and interceptions. All the while, the junior and senior boys cheered from the sidelines, performing the cheers they had learned. The game came to a climactic battle in which both teams were tied, and the game went into sudden death, where the next play determined the winners. With one final drive, the senior team came out victorious and won the game. According to Darrell Taylor, Principal Robison described the game as the best Powderpuff game he had ever experienced. This activity once again cemented the homecoming Powderpuff game as an important Richwoods tradition that must be upheld so it does not become a forgotten relic of the past. Hopefully because of this year, this tradition will continue for generations of Richwoods high school students to come.
